SHATTERED VICTORY

First light, Sunday 27th October, 1805. The combined French and Spanish fleets have been defeated at Trafalgar and Britain is now safe from invasion. THE DASH FOR ENGLAND

Thursday, 31st October, 9.00 a.m off Cape Finisterre. Pickle is overwhelmed by a monstrous sea and jettisons four of her carronades to stay afloat. The exhausted skipper and crew finally make landfall at Falmouth at 9.30 a.m. on Monday, 4th November.

THE TRAFALGAR WAY

Lapenotiere races to London non-stop by post chaise along a route now commemorated as The Trafalgar Way. He changes horses, postillions and chaises 21 times. Expenses for the journey - later reimbursed by an Admiralty clerk - will be £46. 19s. 1d - nearly half a Lieutenant's annual salary in 1805.

SET BEFORE THE KING

Lapenotiere delivers the dispatches to the Admiralty before being sent to Windsor to describe the battle to the King, who is at breakfast with the royal family. He uses cutlery to set out the battle and uses a muffineer to represent HMS Victory. He is later made Commander and given 500 guineas as a reward - The muffineer - the King's gift - is now part of Liskeard's civic treasure.
